click image to enlarge In 2001 Dave Edwards, Ph.D. was working as a research scientist in the pharmaceutical Industry. Finding this very unrewarding, Dave looked for a better way to earn a living, provide for his family and realize the personal satisfaction he felt he was missing. Although academic research was a possibility, this is a highly competitive arena and would have required a greater sacrifice of his personal life than he was willing to spend.
One of Dave's other passions is for building things and since he had worked in the construction industry earlier in his life and he enjoyed that experience; so home construction and remodeling seemed a natural fit. Other influences on Dave were his love of the outdoors and the environment, i.e. to do something that is beneficial for Earth. So, in looking for an alternative carrier Dave, along with the support of his family, determined that building and remodeling environmentally responsible custom homes was what he wanted to do.
So, why start another building contracting company? There are a number of reasons which included:
- In 2001, there were not a lot of choices for employment in 'building green' in the South Bay Area.
- "Green-anything was not in the public vernacular and almost no public interest, even though there was huge un-realized and growing need.
- Starting his own company enabled Dave to develop the Company philosophy, practices, and procedures based on environmentally sound techniques rather than the old school building practices.
- Being his own boss enabled Dave to focus not only on Green construction activities, but to promote and educate the public and local political infrastructure on the "build it green" philosophy and concepts.
click image to enlarge Dave educated himself in building construction and acquired his General Contractor's license and in 2002, started Earth Bound Construction (the name was changed to Earth Bound Homes in 2006) to design and build environmentally responsible custom homes and to remodel existing homes in as environmentally benign way as possible. Since opening, the Company has done significant research into environmentally responsible materials, alternative energy sources and building techniques and continues to do so for the benefit of its clients and the environment. Our goal initially and on-going is to keep Earth Bound Homes at the forefront of 'green' building technology.
From its first projects Earth Bound Homes has been building 'green' and experience has taught us there is a wide range of ways to 'green-up' a home. Also, many clients like to see physical examples of what is being proposed for them. So, in 2005, Dave determined that the Company needed an example of what an environmentally efficient house could look and feel like. Further, to 'walk the talk', Dave, again with the support of his family, determined to renovate the families 1960's Ranch Style dwelling and build a showcase dwelling where many elements of a 'green' home could be seen. After many revisions, a plan was developed and approved and 10 months worth of construction began. The end result is a 31oo sq. ft. home that has been rated the top green home in California by Green Point Rated (www.BuildItGreen.org). In addition, the home has won Best New Custom Home in Santa Clara County's Green Home Tour and Remodeling Magazine's Green Home of the Year Award.
To date Earth Bound Homes has completed or participated in the development of custom projects in Santa Clara, Alameda, and San Mateo counties, with the majority being in Santa Clara County. Our focus and leadership in building 'green' homes has enabled Earth Bound Homes to enjoy a 200% year over year growth with expected revenues of $4.8 million in 2008.
As we look to the future, Earth Bound Homes will continue to expand its knowledge of alternative energy systems; water conservation and reuse systems; deconstruction, recycling and reuse and environmentally neutral construction materials and methods. We will continue our efforts to educate other builders, city and county governments, school and college age students, civic groups and real estate professional on the merits and responsibilities of living 'green.' Finally, we will continue our support of the various 'green' organizations and their efforts on a broader scale to minimize the human impact on our natural environment.
