David Edwards, Ph.D - Owner
In 2002, David Edwards started Earth Bound Construction (now Earth Bound Homes) to design and build environmentally responsible homes and to remodel existing homes with the minimum environmental impact. David is a certified Green Building Professional, a member of the US Green Building Council and a Green Point Rater. At Earth Bound Homes, David is responsible for sales and marketing, client education, employee trainings, public relations, materials research, quality control, budgeting, estimating and design. Dave is the 'green' heartbeat of the company and assures that all company decisions are made with the utmost consideration for environmental impact.
In addition, David spends much of his time as an advocate for 'green building' by giving talks to community groups and public agencies on the benefits of green building. He also participates in classes for other contractors to provide information on how to build better homes using materials and methods that make homes cheaper to maintain, healthier and more able to withstand the environment while providing a significantly smaller impact on the natural environment.
Dave was born in San Francisco but grew up on the central California coast in San Luis Obispo. Spending time on his family's ranch with horses to ride and lots of room to roam, he grew to love the outdoors. That love turned into a passion when he took up cycling for both pleasure and racing in California and Europe. At this time he realized that many of the truly beautiful places in the world are areas where people have only marginally infringed. This led to a personal goal to minimize his impact on the natural environment.
Dave attended Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry. Dave was married during this period and both he and wife Amy attended the University of California, San Diego where they both received Masters and Doctorates in Chemistry and Biochemistry. David's thesis was the first work to show a direct biochemical connection with mechanisms that control the shape of cells and the regulatory pathways that control them. (Activation of LIM-kinase by Pak1 couples Rac/Cdc42 GTPase signalling to actin cytoskeletal dynamics., Nat Cell Biol. 1999 Sep;1(5):253-9)
Following a post-doctoral fellowship at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon, Dave moved back to the Bay Area to work in the pharmaceutical industry. During three years of less than rewarding work as a scientist, David decided to leave industry and to return to his true love of academic science. Dave's family had grown to included three children, ages 4 and 6 month old twins, and it soon because apparent that the career of a successful academic research scientist did not leave much room for a family life. Consequently, Dave left scientific research to do something that would allow him to spend more time with his family and to enjoy the great outdoors.
Through years of remodeling his own homes and those of friends and family and building furniture in his garage, he realized that he wanted to do something that allowed him to be outdoors, work with his hands, see what he had done at the end of the day and to do something that would make the world a better place by reducing our impact on the natural environment. A prolific reader, Dave had soon learned how to build better, stronger and more efficient homes that used less but more durable materials that didn’t off-gas toxic fumes and didn’t contain toxic chemicals. In 2002 Dave started Earth Bound Construction and in 2004 the company rebuilt David's home in Santa Clara, California. The home is the culmination of years of research into environmentally responsible design and materials and is the showcase home for the company (for more information click here). Living with his family in the home has provided Dave a unique understanding of what works and what doesn't, what compromises might be involved with a given green material or method, and what benefits we can realize from each item. This experience is incorporated into each and every project Earth Bound Homes undertakes.
