VanIngen Residence
Possibly the nicest people anywhere in the world have asked us to work on their home. This remodeling and addition project started the middle of April, 2010 and unfortunately, just like all 50 year old homes, showed structural damage from poor construction techniques during the original build and subsequent remodels. The 3200 sq. ft. home is getting about 70% demolished and rebuilt to allow a more open floor plan that seamlessly connects the indoor and outdoor spaces. Designed by Architect Chip Jessup from M- Designs Architects( www.mdesignsarchitects.com), the new home adds a garage and a separate guest bedroom wing to the sprawling house, making the entire home more functional for long term guests and family.
This home's many green features include:
- 70% of house was deconstructed and donated to a materials salvage companies, resulting in a huge tax credit for the homeowners and a large amount of materials that can be used by other people in their homes rather than going to the landfill like it normally would have been in standard demolition.
- Reusing the hardwood floors throughout to reduce construction costs and sustainability
- Spray in Polyurethane closed cell foam and fiberglass insulation function together to insulate and add an air barrier to dramatically increase the efficiency of the house
- Lifetime warrantee roof
- Low VOC paints and adhesives
- Two 96% efficiency forced air heaters replace the large, completely inadequate and leaky 80% efficiency furnace system that was designed so poorly that one whole side of the house never got warm.
