25 years in the making, this home has been the dream of the owner since he bought the property in 1985. After over 2 years of getting the project through the various jurisdictional authorities of the County of Santa Clara, construction began in 2009. Located in the Santa Cruz Mountains, the home is surrounded by 2nd and 3rd growth redwood forest and requires the stringent, fire safe building standards of the Wildlife-Urban Interface Code. The cost of heating and cooling the house should be dramatically reduced as the super insulated SIP home can take advantage of the abundant tree cover and the cool afternoon breezes blowing from the ocean in the warm summer afternoons. The house has a detached garage to separate the owners shop from the house and reduce noice and air pollution from entering the living areas.

This home's many green features include:
  • Structural Insulated Panels for the walls and half the roof.
  • Attic trusses for the remaining portion of the roof offer 600 sq. ft. of free storage space.
  • Unvented Attic assembly requires no vents in the roof, removing one of the most likely areas for fire intrusion, and dramatically increases the energy efficiency of the home
  • Insulation made of recycled denim jeans used for accoustical and thermal insulation on the interior walls
  • Lifetime warrantee, steeply sloped steel roof sheds tree detritus in the fire prone area
  • Low VOC paints and adhesives
  • Recycled content front and back decks
  • Automatic fire sprinklers
  • A high efficiency boiler heats the radiant heat floor
