Taking Responsibility For Our Most Valued Resource
Conservation of the earth means nothing if it is on the backs of those who make it happen. The business world has a poor reputation with respect to social equity, placing more value on making money than on protecting its clients or its workers. The construction industry is renowned for taking advantage of their employees, paying poorly and providing no benefits and then expecting them to do hard, dangerous jobs for long hours and in tough conditions. At Earth Bound Homes, we believe we are successful because of our employees and when the company succeeds, so do our people. We pay above average pay, pay for health insurance for the employee and their family, offer dental insurance, paid sick and bereavement leave, paid vacation leave, we pay for gas when they carpool to jobs. Our founder, Dave Edwards, left his career in science, partially because he wanted to spend more time with his family. He also feels that this is most likely very important for all of our employees and so, to increase their time with their families, we arrange manpower to reduce the amount of commuting our field crews have to do to get to and from our job sites. All of our officers work from their homes, 3-5 days a week, and only travel when required. By being a great company to work for, we get to choose from the best people in the industry and we rarely have employees quit (only 4 have quit in 10 years in business). Listed below are the people who make us what we are now and who will lead us forward in the future.
Randy Potter - Vice President
Randy Potter is Vice President of Earth Bound Homes. Randy holds an MBA in Finance, a BS in Marketing and has over 10 years of professional experience in the Real Estate and Real Estate Development Industries. He is a member of the US Green Building Council, Build It Green, and is a Certified Green Building Professional.
Randy started his career in Technical Sales before returning to graduate school and spending several years as a management consultant. Having spent 3 years working with resort development giant Intrawest, Randy realized the importance of sustainable building, became an advocate for green building practices and pursued a career building custom green homes. He has been involved in some of the greenest custom homes in California and has been instrumental in local green building policies.
As a green building professional, Randy was selected as a member of the Mountain View Environmental Sustainability Task Force, Chaired the Mountain View Built Environment Working Group which wrote the city’s green building standards, and is a regular speaker at several colleges and professional trade groups.
Having grown up on the beaches of Southern California and lived in Lake Tahoe and the San Francisco Bay Area, Randy learned at an early age to appreciate the value of nature and natural resources. An avid outdoorsman and sportsman from an early age, Randy is a certified ski instructor and guide, an avid mountain biker, mountaineer, and sailor, and was an NCAA Scholarship athlete in Soccer. He currently lives with his beautiful wife Kristine and their 2 year old Havanese Sofie who both share his passion for a low impact lifestyle filled with plenty of activity, friends and family.
Stephanie Hough-Willis - Operations and Office Manager
One of our longest serving team members, Stephanie was hired to better organize and run the company office as well as help the project managers keep track of billing and bookkeeping. She oversees all business aspect of the company. As Business Operations Manager she manages the company office and financial operations including the company financial documents, customer invoicing, bill payment, company offices operations manuals and documents.
Stephanie was born and raised in the San Jose area. Her family owned and ran local construction company where she learned construction and the operation of a small company. She worked for another local construction company as an operations coordinator before she moved to Earth Bound Homes.
Francisco Espinosa - Production Manager/Lead Carpenter
Francisco is one of our longest running employees and is the leader of all our field crews. Francisco has been called a genius by several of our clients and has an amazing gift to solve problems before they become problems. Francisco is a jack of all trades, and runs not only our framing crews, but also our finish crews. With the rare ability to understand and visualize the entire build in his mind before he starts building it, Francisco knows what has to be done early in the build so the final product looks just as the architect drew it. Like Dave, on his off time when he is not playing with his kids, Francisco is looking over the plans for his current and also his future projects, so that he can skillfully plan for the implementation of the engineers structure and the architects vision.
Francisco is the definition of a family man. He has three kids and a great wife with whom he has been married to for 14 years. In fact, when he is not working, he is rarely apart from his kids and the rest of his and his wifes' family, who all live in the south San Francisco Bay. One of the best parts about growing up in San Jose is that Francisco can see how the area is changing and can see the projects that he has built and remodeled over the years. Knowing that he has done so while dramatically reducing the impact of those buildings on the environment, is very personally satisfying to him.
Also, giving back to the community is very important to Francisco and his family and much of their free time is spent working in the community. Earth Bound Homes is incredibly fortunate to have Francisco as the leader of our field crews, and as a teacher for us all.
Jose Avalos - Lead Carpenter
Jose was one of our first employees over 5 years ago. And while he kept a low profile for his first month, he had to, he was under a house digging foundations, he has become an invaluable leader and role model for us all. Always the first to volunteer for even the worst jobs, Jose prides himself on leading by example and showing us all how hard work should be done.
Jose enjoys his work and truly appreciates working in green building and knowing that all his efforts help reducing our impact on the environment. He loves constantly learning on the job and seeing the changes on the homes that he builds and how it changes the lives of the homeowners. He has lived in Sunnyvale for 8 years and enjoys the people and the proximity to the outdoors where he can ride his bike.
Carlos Orellana - Lead Carpenter
Carlos has been with us since 2009 and has made a place for himself at Earth Bound. He is a skilled framer with experience in painting, cabinet work and finish carpentry, making him a great addition to our multifaceted team. While still learning the numerous differences between building as most companies build home and the much more methodical and diligent way that we at Earth Bound Homes build homes, Carlos enjoys that challenge of learning new things every day. Fortunately for us, Carlos learns quickly and always has a smile on his face.
The reason Carlos has a smile on his face is that he loves his job and the flexibility it give him to do the things that he really loves to do, like spending time with his two year old some, Dani and watching and playing soccer. Carlos also loves to spend time out doors, enjoying the environment and seeing what he works so hard to protect. On the weekends, Carlos can often be found camping with his family throughout Northern California.
Juan Flores - Finish Carpenter
Juan is our newest employee, having come to us after working for two different cabinet manufactures for over 5 years. Juan runs one of our finish crews, installing cabinets, appliances, trim, doors, casings and anything else that needs to be done just before our clients move into their homes. With an eye for detail and a careful hand, Juan helps get things just right.
Juan enjoys working with his hands and seeing the results of your labors. He appreciates how his work has a positive impact on the environment and how he often gets to see the clients move into the homes and the looks on their faces as their dreams are realized. Juan has a lovely wife and a daughter and a son and loves to spend time with them, playing kids games and going to the park. He has lived in Sunnyvale for eleven years and loves the close proximity of the parks to his home and the reduced commute he has living in the heart of the Silicon Valley.
Damien Rivera - Apprentice Carpenter
Damien has worked for Earth Bound Homes for over three years and has made a permanent place for himself in our company. With an unrivaled work ethic and amazing strength to weight ratio, Damien can do the heavy lifting where the big guys cannot even fit. Damien is progressing well through his apprenticeship program at Earth Bound and as his skills develop, we look forward to him playing an even greater roll in training the next generation of carpenters at Earth Bound.
Damien is quiet but hilarious, and during lunch, his hysterical personality really comes out, as the pressure of working hard and being safe is off and he can let his hair out, so to speak. In his free time, he likes to spend time with his family, though his often 1 hour long commute from Fremont reduces the amount of time that he gets to spend with his family during the week. On the weekends, Damien likes to take his kids to the park and relaxing, and not driving.
Hugo Perez - Apprentice Carpenter
Hugo has been with Earth Bound for three years. After working for another construction company in San Francisco, Hugo has been on of our most dependable team members, having never missed a day of work. Hugo is the first to volunteer for the hardest jobs and always gets things done ahead of schedule. While he rarely talks, he is so familiar with the way that we do things at Earth Bound, that he is usually one step ahead of the carpenter with whom he is working. Hugo is in the middle of the 5-6 year apprentice program for learning the carpentry trade and we look forward to him completing his apprenticeship and many long years after that as a journeyman carpenter at Earth Bound.
Hugo sees the difference between Earth bound homes and other companies in that we make a concerted effort to help the environment but using recycled materials, reducing waste and protecting the forests that are so prevalent in his home country of Guatemala. Hugo is originally from the northern portion of Guatemala and has been in the United States for many years. He has a beautiful wife and a 9 year old daughter who likes to read and dance.
